Pressestimmen

PRAISE FOR THE AVIATOR by Eugene Vodolazkin: "Evocative and enigmatic...despite this book's gentle love story or its murder mystery or its sf flourishes, it is, in many ways, a quintessentially Russian novel, as vivid and probing as they come." --Booklist, Starred Review "The arc of the narrative is as simple and clever as a philosopher's parable. But this is also a deeply emotional book, and often it is these probing questions that give human depth to the characters.... THE AVIATOR is a quietly radical novel, animated by the spirit of Dmitry Likhachev, an academic who knew what it was to suffer the blows of history first-hand." --Words Without Borders "A fascinating, science fiction-tinged chronicle of a century in Russia." --BBC Culture "A brilliant, though-provoking read." --Historical Novel Society, Editor's Pick "[The AVIATOR] offers the pleasures of a time travel narrative without the usual hokeyness.... Great reading for all audiences." --Library Journal "An unabashed, panoramic view of the landscape of human consciousness affected by time, place, faith, and faces.... In the vein of Dostoyevsky, religion here is not an enemy to be vanquished, but rather a consolation and a means of deciphering the mechanisms of the human mind and the world--seen and unseen. The Aviator speaks to common experience while soaring into realms that enfold the human drama below." --Foreword Reviews, Starred ReviewPRAISE FOR LAURUS by Eugene Vodolazkin "In LAURUS, Vodolazkin aims directly at the heart of the Russian religious experience and perhaps even at that maddeningly elusive concept that is cherished to the point of cliché the Russian soul." -- Ken Kalfus in The New Yorker "A quirky, ambitious book ... Eugene Vodolazkin succeeds gloriously." --Janet Fitch, Los Angeles Review of Books "Brilliant storytelling ... a uniquely lavish, multilayered work." --Booklist "LAURUS is without a doubt one of the most moving and mysterious books you will read in this or any other year." -- The American Conservative "A timeless epic ... pointed, touching, and at times humorous, unpredictably straying from the path and leading readers along a wild chase through time, language, and medieval Europe." --Asymptote Journal "An epic journey novel in all the best traditions. There are countless colorful characters, exciting twists of fate, and profound truths in the protagonist's words and deeds... The Idiot meets Canterbury Tales meets The Odyssey. Highly recommended." -- Russian Life Magazine "Love, faith, and a quest for atonement are the driving themes of an epic, prizewinning Russian novel that, while set in the medieval era, takes a contemporary look at the meaning of time.... With flavors of Umberto Eco and The Canterbury Tales, this affecting, idiosyncratic novel ... is an impressive achievement." --Kirkus

I bought the book as soon as it became available. I love the review from Marjorie Cunningham. Let me add a few things: I already read Eugene Vodolazkin's later books "Laurus" and "Aviator" but "Solovyov and Larionov" was his first published book in Russian which was translated into English last. I find the 3rd person narrative in the book to be rather odd and limiting in seeing the inner soul of each character. The romantic stories are a little beyond PG and sometimes cross the line for me but are still cleaner in explanation then most modern novels. Yes, we are all here because of reproduction and there is some philosophical humor and questioning of existence that is well expressed in this novel. Looking back I can understand that the author was revealing and questioning the 3 different "Loves" a man can have with a woman: Platonic, Agape, and Eros. The book has some Russian and Ukrainian references (mostly political novelists and play writers: for example a portrait of Taras G. Shevchenko is mention) that I needed to ask my Russian wife what the joke was about. Therefore if you don't have a Russian relation or friend be sure to have your Wikipedia open in a browser.

Solovyov is a naïve young scholor who has been given the topic of General Larionov for his thesis. General Larionov was a commander in the White Russian Army during the Russian Civil War. The mystery surrounding him is why Larionov was allowed to live the remainder of his life following the war in the new Soviet Union. He was even given a pension by the soviets. Solovyov goes to Yalta where Larionov last lived to find some lost wages of Larionov’s memoir in an effort to solve this mystery. Along the way, he meets a host of unique characters. This book is a very unique blend of literary genres. The author has a dry wit and I enjoyed his humorous satire. I’m sure I missed some of the satirical references due to not being Russian but there were quite a few that I understood. The military history could be somewhat dry at times and sometimes quite interesting. Solovyov is a very likeable character and I enjoyed the romantic parts of the book and the fun that Vodolazkin poked at his main character. It was a bit slow taking off but once it did, I became captivated by this Russian tale with all of its stories within a story. This is a true Russian novel with all the complications that Russian novels entail.Recommended.This book was given to me by the publicist in return for an honest review.
